Problem, solved.

Klik is LEGO’s first design system to help build unified user experiences across its business systems – helping teams to work well.

The Background

At the LEGO Group, I noticed a recurring set of challenges that were affecting the productivity of the teams and the quality of our digital products. There were persistent concerns from various stakeholders: Product Managers were constantly asked to reduce product costs and meet tighter budgets, UX Designers struggled with extended design timelines, and Developers faced constant UI regressions. The inconsistency in user experiences across our digital products led to frustration, and teams were bogged down by unnecessary friction over small design decisions like button styles. On top of this, business heads were finding it difficult to onboard new colleagues quickly, impacting the speed and effectiveness of team integration.

These challenges highlighted the need for a unified solution, something that would streamline processes, reduce costs, and bring clarity and coherence to our digital products. This led me to the idea of creating a Business Design System called Klik. The vision was clear: to bring system in play into the LEGO digital product suite—reducing complexity, improving efficiency, and allowing our designers and developers to work in a more harmonious, faster, and more innovative way.

The Problem

As LEGO’s digital products continued to grow in complexity, the lack of a cohesive design framework became increasingly evident. Product Managers were under pressure to reduce costs, but without a design system in place, each project started from scratch, leading to inefficient use of resources. UX Designers found themselves spending an inordinate amount of time designing interfaces without a clear set of guidelines or reusable components, which led to delays. Developers faced frustration over UI inconsistencies, such as mismatched styles and misaligned elements, often resulting in regressions that were difficult to pinpoint and resolve.

The broader team friction was palpable. People were often unsure about which design patterns to use, creating confusion and slowing down decision-making. The onboarding process for new employees was another bottleneck; without a standardized set of tools or documentation, new hires struggled to get up to speed with LEGO’s digital platforms. There was a growing realization that something needed to change in order to make the digital design process at LEGO more efficient, consistent, and scalable.

The Solution

I initiated the development of Klik, a comprehensive design system that would address these challenges by providing a unified framework for digital design at LEGO. Klik was more than just a set of guidelines; it was a toolkit for creativity, a system that could be built upon, iterated, and scaled. Its core goal was to reduce complexity while providing clear, reusable design components that could be quickly adapted for different projects. Klik would empower Product Managers to work within their budgets by offering pre-built components that reduced the need for custom designs. It would help UX Designers accelerate their workflows by providing a consistent library of interface elements, saving time spent on repetitive tasks.

For Developers, Klik would eliminate UI regressions by providing them with a coherent and tested set of components, ensuring consistency across all projects. By defining a shared visual language, Klik would promote a consistent and high-quality user experience across all LEGO digital products. The system also aimed to reduce friction within teams by providing a common language for all stakeholders—ensuring that decisions regarding design elements, like button styles, were aligned. Lastly, Klik would streamline the onboarding process for new colleagues, offering a clear and structured introduction to LEGO’s design principles and tools.

The Benefits

  • The implementation of Klik had a profound impact on how teams at LEGO worked together and how products were developed. For Product Managers, Klik allowed for greater control over budgets, as it significantly reduced the need for custom design work and minimized costly redesigns. UX Designers saw a marked reduction in the time spent on design iterations, as they could now rely on a consistent set of components that were easily adaptable. Developers were able to work faster and with more confidence, knowing that the components they were implementing were fully aligned with the overall design system and had been thoroughly tested.
  • For the broader team, Klik reduced friction by providing clear guidelines on design and interface decisions, ensuring everyone was on the same page. This improved collaboration across departments and allowed for faster decision-making. One of the most significant benefits of Klik was its ability to provide a cohesive and consistent experience for users across all LEGO digital platforms. As the system evolved, it empowered teams to innovate more freely, knowing that they had a solid foundation on which to build.
  • Klik also played a crucial role in onboarding new colleagues. By providing a clear, structured design system, new hires could quickly familiarize themselves with LEGO’s design language and processes, speeding up their integration and enabling them to contribute effectively sooner. Ultimately, Klik became the backbone of LEGO’s digital design process, ensuring that products were not only created more efficiently but were also more aligned with the company’s vision of inspiring and developing the builders of tomorrow.
