The Background

As mobile technology began reshaping communication, entertainment, and work, it became clear that traditional user research methods—often conducted in controlled lab environments—were insufficient to understand how people truly interacted with mobile devices.

At France Telecom Research & Development, I joined the Wireless World Research Forum to address this gap, focusing on how user research should be adapted to study mobile interactions in real-world environments. My work explored how mobility introduced new variables, such as constantly changing contexts, distractions, and evolving user behaviors.

This was a pioneering area of study at the time, as researchers were still debating whether lab-based simulations could adequately capture the complexities of mobile usage.

The Problem

Existing usability studies for mobile systems were largely conducted in laboratory settings, where researchers attempted to simulate mobility by asking users to walk on treadmills or follow predefined paths while using a device. However, these artificial environments failed to replicate the full complexity of real-world mobility.

In practice, people used mobile devices in dynamic environments—walking through crowded streets, switching between network zones, interacting with different physical and social contexts, and dealing with interruptions. These factors influenced how users engaged with their devices, making it critical to develop new methodologies that preserved ecological validity.

Additionally, emerging mobile technologies were enabling new forms of interaction, but their potential remained underexplored because traditional research methods could not fully capture them.

The Solution

To address these challenges, I developed research methodologies that allowed for studying user behavior in natural settings, without the constraints of a lab. This included the use of mobile logging tools, wearable observation devices, and ethnographic techniques to capture real-world interactions with mobile technology.

I also contributed to the design of a dedicated indoor and outdoor research platform that enabled systematic observations of how people used mobile services in varied environments. By incorporating principles from distributed cognition and human-computer interaction research, I helped shape new approaches that accounted for the fluid nature of mobile usage.

My findings were published and presented at international conferences in South Korea, the USA, and Canada, where I represented France Telecom and contributed to shaping the broader conversation on mobile usability research.

The Benefits

  • My work helped redefine how user research for mobile technologies was conducted, influencing both academia and industry.
  • By demonstrating the limitations of lab-based studies and advocating for real-world testing, I contributed to more accurate, context-aware insights that informed the design of better mobile services.
  • The methodologies I developed provided a foundation for studying mobile interactions in a way that acknowledged the complexities of mobility, ultimately leading to more intuitive and user-friendly mobile applications.
  • Additionally, my research helped France Telecom establish itself as a leader in mobile UX research, fostering collaborations with other institutions and setting new standards for evaluating mobile usability in the field.

”Human-machine interaction generates itself its own context of achievement and dynamics, focused on the realization of a given goal. Mobility underlies complex problems of articulation and combination between various types of context and activity.”
